Rocco "Sonny" Furello

Rocco “Sonny” Furello, 82, of the Bunker Hill Section of Dunmore, died early Wednesday morning in the Regional Hospital of Scranton. His wife is the former Josephine Niemkiewicz.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Rocco F. and Jane Valvano Furello, was a graduate of Dunmore High School Class of 1957 and was a life long member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore. Prior to retirement, Rocco worked for Maid-Rite Steak Co. in Dunmore for 23 years and prior to that was employed by Williams Baking Co. in Scranton as well as Nissen Bakery in Massachusetts and Maine.

To say he was a dedicated, loving, and proud husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, would be an understatement. He was always there for his children and grandchildren by teaching them in all aspects of life, always spending time with his entire family and friends by never missing a day or opportunity to talk to them. Rocco loved sharing stories of his youth and fond memories of living in Bunker Hill. He enjoyed playing cards, following the stock market, watching the New York Yankees, and feeding the wild birds in the neighborhood.

Also surviving are sons, Richard and his wife Sue, Rockvale, TN and Rocco and his life partner Stacy Cosgrove, Dunmore, a daughter Jill McDonough and her husband James, Dunmore, eight grandchildren, Richard, Santina, and Christina Furello and Maura, Maggie, Shannon, Jillian, and Virginia McDonough, as well as nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother Joseph and a sister Lois Cianflone.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Carlucci-Golden DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St. Dunmore with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30AM in St. Rocco’s Church, Kurtz St. in the Bunker Hill section of Dunmore.

Interment to take place in Dunmore Cemetery.
