Ruth Popkin, 91, a former Scranton resident, died Friday in Mt. Airy, Md. She was the wife of the late Howard Popkin, who died in 2014.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Max and Esther Pollock Katz. She was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and East Stroudsburg State College. Prior to retirement, she was a Special Education teacher at the Morey Elementary School in the Stroudsburg School District. She and her late husband had also owned Jewelry and Foolery, a clothing boutique on Main Street in Stroudsburg for many years.
Ruth had been a longtime member of Temple Israel, Stroudsburg, who enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren, and fashion and traveling.
Surviving are two sons, Michael, Lancaster, Pa., and Lee and wife Tina, New Market, Md.; grandchildren, Liam, Ethan and Brittney, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Gladys Feldman and Beverly Rosenshein; brothers, Mickey and Lester Katz and an infant brother.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore. The family will receive visitors from 1:15 p.m. until the time of service. Interment to follow in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery. There is no local Shiva. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
