Salvatore Luongo, 90, Petersburg Section of Scranton, died Thursday at home. He and his wife, the former Filomena DeVito celebrated 66 years of marriage on December 6th.
Born in Guardia Lombardi in the Province of Avellino, Italy, he was the son of the late Angelo and Maria Basile Luongo and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Scranton. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Crystal Soda and Water Company in Scranton.
A very proud and respectful man, Salvatore was always willing to help others and take care of everyone else’s needs before his own. Family was the center of his world. He as a very loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who loved visits from the grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening and making homemade wine, and loved to cook on both Saturday night and for family dinner on Sunday. The rest of the week, he savored his wife’s home-cooked dinners every night, and could often be heard talking about his prized new Cadillac. He also was a gifted singer and would regularly serenade his wife and friends in his hometown of Guardia.
Surviving is a daughter, Anna Luongo DeAngelo and husband Paul of Tannersville; sons Salvatore Luongo, Jr. and wife Michele of Scranton, and Renato Luongo and wife Meghan of Scranton; his brothers Joseph Luongo and wife Patricia of Scranton; a son-in-law David R. Gallagher of Fairfax, VA; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by daughters Maria Luongo Gallagher, and infant daughter Angela; his brothers Gaetano and Antonino Luongo, as well as an infant sister.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 9:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 800 Taylor Ave., Scranton. Entombment to follow in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. and at the church Monday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of the mass.
All those attending the mass are asked to go directly to the church that morning.
