Samuel “Sam” F. Vitris, Jr., 60, of West Scranton died peacefully Tuesday at home surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife, the former, Judy Lowry. The couple had been happily married for 38 years.
Born in Scranton, son of Samuel F. Vitris, Sr., Scranton, and the late Jacqueline Terruso Vitris, Sam was a graduate of West Scranton High School, class of 1979, and went on to attend Penn State University. He was a member of St. Lucy’s Church, Scranton. Prior to retirement, Sam worked for and was a dedicated employee of the City of Scranton for 41 years, working in many capacities including the Department of Public Works and the Bureau of Highways. He was the President of the International Association of the Machinist and Aerospace Workers Union Lodge #2305 for 32 years, of which he was very proud.
He was a dedicated son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Above everything, Sam loved his family and cherished quality time with those he loved. He looked forward to family vacations every summer and could always be found attending his grandson’s baseball games. Sam was an avid New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys fan and a member of the Victor Alfieri Club, Scranton.
Sam will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is also survived by his son, Samuel F. Vitris, III and wife, Taryn, Archbald; daughters, Sabrina Santucci and husband, Chris, Scranton, and Shalane Vitris, Philadelphia; a brother, Joseph Vitris, Scranton; grandchildren, Brett, Brennan, and Brynlee; mother-in-law, Barbara Lowry, St. Petersburg, FL.; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and fellow Union Brothers.
He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, Don Lowry; and his brother-in-law, Donny Lowry.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Lucy’s Church, Scranton St., West Scranton. All those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church. Interment will take place in the Cathedral Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. in Savino Traditional Funerals & Cremation Care, Carl J. Savino, Jr. Supervisor, 157 South Main Avenue in West Scranton.
Those attending both the viewing and the mass are kindly and respectfully asked to socially distance without making direct contact with the family and are required to wear a mask.
