Shelbourne Richard (Shelby) Lyman

Shelby Lyman, 82, Windsor, NY and Florida, died Sunday afternoon in UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, NY. He and his wife, the former Michele Merrell were married May 12, 2006.

He was born October 22, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY and was a graduate of Harvard University having earned a Master’s degree. He had a career as a syndicated chess columnist which allowed his knowledge and opinion of the game to be viewed by people all over the world.

Besides his wife, survivors include Michele’s sons, Chuck, Corey and Casey Goff and their families; his mother-in-law Lois Merrell; brothers-in-law Richard and Greg Merrell and their wives, Sheri and Lisa; his wife’s cousin Jan Kasten; and longtime friend Marcy May. 

Services will be held for close family at Lyman’s home in Windsor. His ashes will be spread near a creek on the property, where his first dog, Chipper, was buried and the ashes of a good friend also were spread.
