Shirley Ann Scholl James Obituary

Shirley Ann Scholl James,87, of West Scranton died on May 7, 2021 at Abington Manor, South Abington Township, where she had been a resident.  She was the widow of the late Delbert James Sr., who died on August 15, 2013.  They been married for 58 years.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, daughter of the late Arthur G. and Florence Morgan Scholl, she was educated in Scranton public schools and was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, class of 1951. She also graduated from Scranton-Lackawanna College in 1952 in the Executive Secretarial course of study.  She had been employed as a secretary by the Scranton Electric Company until 1955, when she was terminated for marrying the love of her life, Delbert Sr.  She was a follower of the Protestant faith.

Shirley volunteered for many years at Bethania Presbyterian Church, with PTA’s, the Cub Scouts, and even the Brownies and Girl Scouts, despite not having any daughters.  She enjoyed watching golf and Jeopardy on TV, as well as following the Penn State Nittany Lions, and she loved traveling all over Europe and the United States with her late husband, Delbert Sr.

She was an incredible wife, a fantastic mother, and a great friend to all who knew her.  Her greatest quality was that, in all her years, she never had a bad word to say about anyone.

Shirley was a breast cancer survivor and a stroke survivor.  And she fought a courageous battle with colon cancer and Parkinson’s disease the last few years of her life.

Her family would like to give special thanks to her loving niece, Neola Lynott, and husband Jack, who were her primary caregivers for several years.

Surviving are two sons, Donald R. James and wife, Lauri, Rehoboth Beach, DE; and Delbert James Jr., Scranton; four grandchildren, Alexandra, Nicole, Ryan, and Morgan James; a brother-in-law, William H. James Sr.; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald Frederick Scholl, Sr.

There will be no viewing and the funeral will be held privately, at the family’s convenience. Interment will take place at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to their favorite charity, in Shirley’s name.
