Thomas Murphy Obituary

Thomas "Murph" Murphy, 77, a lifelong resident of South Scranton, passed away on January 5, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and his two cherished granddogs Ollie and Fletcher.  He and his devoted wife of 52 years, the former Diana Springer, had married September 9th 1972.

Born on December 1, 1947, to the late George and Grace Scholl Murphy, Thomas grew up in South Scranton and graduated from Scranton Technical High School in 1965. He dedicated 57 years of his life to his craft as a member of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 5, where he worked as a skilled mason.

A proud veteran of the Pennsylvania National Guard, Murph was recognized as a sharpshooter during his service. His loyalty extended beyond family and country to his beloved Los Angeles Dodgers—a passion he carried from childhood when they were still known as the Brooklyn Dodgers.

In his younger years, he was an avid third baseman in both slow-pitch and modified softball leagues and enjoyed drag racing with friends. Known for his love of Genesee beer and time spent at the corner bar, Murph created countless memories with those who knew him best. A fierce protector of his family, he leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter that will be deeply missed.

He took pride in cruising around town in his treasured 1948 Pontiac Torpedo Back, turning heads wherever he went.

He is survived by daughters Carla Murphy and Eileen Vidmosko and her husband Stephen; a sister Ann Hogan and her husband Sam Fioretti; nieces Kathleen Madzin and her husband Ed, Grace Ann Hogan and her other half Brian Joyce; and great-niece Ellie Ann Puhalla.

He was preceded in death by his in-laws Shirley and Bob Springer; and several aunts uncles and friends

May Murph’s memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
