Tom Lyons of Dunmore passed away peacefully at home on September 9, 2026, with his loving wife and best friend Eileen Maloney Lyons at his side. They shared 42 years together happily raising their five children. Tom was given a cancer diagnosis eight years ago and met every day thereafter with hope, strength, indomitable spirit, and the determination to never let his illness keep him from taking one more trip to Disney or to his beloved Emerald Isle.
Tom was born in Johnson City, New York, to T. Frank and Helen Scott Lyons. He grew up in Pittston and attended St. John’s the Evangelist School. After graduating from King’s College, Tom took a position with the New York Department of Health in New York City. Tom quickly embraced his status as a true New Yorker. It was there he became the legendary “TL”. He became an accomplished professional in the field of hospital safety and administration, moving on from the Health Department to various health care institutions in the New York City area over 37 years.
Tom was an amazing husband, loving father, devoted “Tunna” to his grandchildren, supportive brother, uncle, cousin, neighbor, and friend. He had a sharp mind and a sly wit. He could display an equal amount of seriousness or, depending on the situation, charming mischief. He was generous, thoughtful, loved a good story, dominated a dance floor, and without much prompting could belt out an Irish Ballad from his expansive repertoire.
Over time, Tom grew into his signature passions. He was an avid and attentive gardener. He was analytical, curious, and known to take deep-dive searches into his Irish roots. He became a true believer in the magic of Disney, a passion he and Eileen have passed on to their children and grandchildren.
To say that Tom, TL, Dad, Tunna, Big Tom will be missed is simply inadequate. He loved and was so loved by his Lyons and Maloney family. His Eileen, children, family, and friends will forever feel his absence whenever any pub stool sits empty.
Tom is survived by his wife Eileen, sons Bob and Tom; daughters Sarah Ehnot and husband Tom; Brigid Lyons, Mollie McGrady and husband Ryan; and grandchildren, Tommy, Jake and Emma Ehnot. He is also survived by his sister Patty (Tim) Fretz and brothers Joe (Cathy) Lyons and Charlie (Kelly) Lyons and a legion of adoring nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Mary Catherine Zurner and Ann Nardone.
Lastly, Tom leaves behind his extensive collection of over 50 Hawaiian shirts, suitable for every occasion. In honor of Tom, please feel free to wear your best Hawaiian shirt to the service.
Tom’s family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to his care team, including Dr. Lisa Thomas, Nicole Francis, and Jess Krochta, for the incredible care and support Tom received throughout his illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, at St. Paul’s Church, 1510 Penn Avenue, Scranton.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Friday, September 18th, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Carlucci–Golden–DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker Street, Dunmore.
