Thomas P. Spott, Scranton, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, September 19.
Born in Scranton on December 1, 1943, Tom was a devoted husband to his wife, Barbara. He worked for many years as a heavy equipment operator and was well respected for his excellent skills, knowledge, and dedication.
Tom was an avid Lionel train enthusiast, and his Christmas train set display was elaborate and crafted with perfect precision. It was a true work of art, bringing joy to family and friends, becoming a part of a Spott Christmas tradition.
From his extensive travels with Barb, Tom built a vast collection of license plates which he displayed in his garage, featuring plates from all 50 states and several countries. This display was so impressive, it was highlighted in The Scranton Times.
Tom was known for his handywork and approached every project with great care and meticulous attention to detail. He was often called upon by neighbors and friends to help with such work, and Tom was always happy to lend a hand.
Tom cherished time spent with family and friends, enjoyed lively gatherings, good food, and never turned down a well-made Manhattan. He enjoyed hosting his monthly card games, Fourth of July parties, and annual Superbowl parties. It was at such events that Tom shared his extraordinary story telling skills. When Tom told of past events and adventures, he left his audience in stitches, roaring with laughter at his experiences and adventures. Those who knew him will remember his warmth, humor, and love of life.
The family would like to thank his friends and neighbors for their kindness and support during this difficult time, especially John and Michele McGovern and their children, who were like family to Tom and Barbara.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Jeannette Williams Spott; his brothers, Matthew and Frederick; his mother-in-law, Madeline Mariano and; sister-in-law, Ann Spott.
He is survived by his sister, Jeanne Barnes, Scranton, and sister-in-law, MaryAnn Spott, Clarks Summit, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 on Saturday at Savino Traditional Funerals & Cremation Care, 157 Main Ave., West Scranton followed immediately by a blessing service. Entombment will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery, 1708 Oram Street, West Scranton.
