Thomas J. Mangieri Obituary

It is with great sadness and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that the family of Thomas Joseph Mangieri, of Roaring Brook Township, announce his sudden passing on Saturday, September 27, at the age of 82, surrounded by those he loved most and who cherish him dearly.

Born in Scranton in 1943, Tom was the son of the late Catherine (née Finan) and Gaetano (Thomas) Mangieri. He attended Scranton public schools, working as a baker from a young age. Tom proudly served in the US Navy from 1960-64 across airfields in the North Atlantic and was honorably discharged as an Airman. He moved to Bridgeport, CT, where he met his beloved wife, Nancy (née Gentile), before returning with his young family to the Scranton area.

Tom was a truck driver for 35 years with Roadway Express, retiring in 2007. He was a proud member of Teamsters Local 229, where he also served as an elected trustee. Tom was also a long-standing member of St. Eulalia Parish in Roaring Brook Township.

The life of every party, Tom had a commanding presence and radiated formidable energy. He was a passionate political progressive, volunteering to get out the vote for causes he cared about most. He enjoyed delicious dinners out on the town, never passed up the chance for a long road trip or even the most inconvenient airport run, and spent countless hours perfecting his golf swing and poker game. He found joy at the beach, in watching a good film and, most of all, in time shared with friends and the family he loved fiercely.

In addition to Nancy, his wife of 57 years, Tom is survived by daughter Tina and son Thomas, son-in-law Ephraim McDowell, daughter-in-law Pauline, and grandson Giacomo McDowell; sisters Catherine O’Donnell (Ken), Marie Lalley (Frank), Deborah Chilek, Diane Stango (Vince), and Delphine Kalinowski (Rick); sister-in-law Marylou Sessa; beloved nieces and nephews and their extended families; innumerable and deeply valued friends; and many more whose lives were enriched by their time together. Tom was predeceased by his mother, father, brothers-in-law Joseph Chilek and Frank Sessa, and brother James, who passed in May of this year.

A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, October 3, at 11:00 am at St. Eulalia Parish, 214 Blue Shutters Road, Roaring Brook Township. Family and friends may call at the church from 10:00 am until the start of Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
