Captain Van Edward Chiavacci, Jr, 51 of Dunmore, passed away on Friday at home of natural causes.
He is the son of Van Chiavacci, Sr. and the late Catherine Decker Chiavacci. He was born on July 19, 1968 in Patterson, New Jersey, returning to the area early in life and growing up in Dunmore.
He graduated from Dunmore High School’s class of 1986 then attended Wilkes College on a football scholarship.
After joining the Dunmore Fire Department in 1994 he engaged in a training course at the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy in Lewistown, successfully completing a rigorous curriculum. Van loved his job and attained the rank of Captain early in his career before retiring in 2015. He never married but family members would joke that he was married to the fire department.
Van’s family would like to thank the countless number of friends from school, his job and life that were always there for him in time of need.
Also surviving are his sisters; Jennifer Biko and husband Charles, Roaring Brook Township, Vanessa Chiavacci, Old Forge. An aunt; Jeanette McCormick and husband Robert, Dunmore. An uncle, Delbert Decker and wife Corita, Scranton. Nieces; Emily and Julia Biko and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents; Louis and Madelyn Domenick Chiavacci and maternal grandparents; Delbert and Rose May Decker.
A private viewing will be held for his family on Friday at the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore.
Those wishing to attend the graveside service at the Cathedral Cemetery on Oram St. in Scranton are asked to go directly to the cemetery for 11:00am on Friday.
