Walter E. Sack Obituary

Walter E. Sack, 91, of Dunmore passed away on Thursday afternoon, surrounded by his family.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Rita Quatra Sack.  Walter was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend and will be greatly missed.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Adolph Sack and Stephania Terry Sack.  He graduated from Scranton Central High School where he was a star on the track team and held a long-term record.

As a young father, he went on to earn both a B.S and M.B.A degree from the University of Scranton.

He served an enlistment in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, followed by many years in the U.S. Navy Reserve, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer.  He proudly raised the flag as part of the color guard during many Memorial Day ceremonies in Dunmore.

Early in his professional career, Walter worked in the banking industry.  He then worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as an Accountant for over 40 years, until his retirement at age at 87.

In his free time, Walter was often found tending to his amazing vegetable garden, and completing many extensive home improvement projects. There was nothing he couldn’t fix and he had a tool for everything!

He and Rita enjoyed square dancing and were longtime active members of the Saints-and-Aints Square Dance Club. They were also avid polka dancers and were often spotted dancing together on the WVIA weekly polka show with their many polka friends.

Walter and Rita enjoyed traveling with family and friends throughout their lives, and attending local sporting events and festivals.

Walter was a long-time member of SS Anthony & Rocco Parish in Dunmore.

Surviving is his children, David Sack and wife Brenda of Virginia Beach, VA; Mary Ellen Prince and husband Anthony of Seagirt, NJ; and Robyn Symons and husband Michael of Doylestown, PA. Also surviving are grandchildren Emily Shield and husband Johnny, Katherine Sack,  Anthony Prince Jr., Troy Prince, Matthew Prince, Ryan Symons, and Sean Symons and great grandchildren Leif Shield and Olive Shield.

Walter’s family would like to extend profound gratitude to the caregivers at Green Ridge Care Center for the care they provided to Walter.  The family would also like to thank the Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their care and compassion during Walter’s final weeks.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 2, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St. in Dunmore.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 3, at 9:30 am at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 208 Smith St. in Dunmore.
