William J. Janssen, 85, of Scranton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 5th, at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore, surrounded by love. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, JoAnn Amico Janssen, with whom he built a life rooted in faith and family.
Born in Scranton on February 23, 1940, William—known fondly as Bill, or “Poppy” by his grandchildren—was the son of the late Andrew and Helen Anglin Janssen. A proud graduate of South Catholic High School, Class of 1958, Bill went on to serve his country in the United States Army, carrying that sense of duty into every chapter of his life.
For four decades, William worked with Harper Collins, where his dedication and work ethic earned the respect of colleagues and friends alike. He was a man of deep faith and community spirit—an active member of Knights of Columbus, the Holy Name Society, and the YMCA for 20 years, where he found joy in fellowship and service. A lifelong Notre Dame fan, Bill cheered with unwavering loyalty, whether from the stands or his living room rocker.
Bill’s greatest pride was his family. He was a true family man, always putting himself second to ensure his presence for those most important to him. He was punctual and was always early for piano recitals and sporting events for his children and grandchildren. William was often the loudest voice cheering in the crowd. He was also an avid reader, taking his children and grandchildren on excursions to the local library.
William was surrounded by a large friend group and considered them as close as family.
In addition to his cherished wife, he is survived by his daughters, Denise Janssen of Scranton and Susan Caparo and husband Loren of Elmhurst; his son, William Janssen of Florida; and his beloved grandchildren, Cassandra Bryar and husband Matthew, and Katrina Caparo. He also leaves behind his sisters Mary Grace Zelsnack, Ann Janssen, and Helen Sklanka, whose bonds remained strong through the years.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Andrew Janssen.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to all that cared for Bill so genuinely and lovingly.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to SS. Anthony & Rocco Parish, 303 Smith St., Dunmore, PA 18512; or to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 30 E.D. Preate Dr., Suite 108, Moosic, PA 18507.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 8th at 9:30 AM at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith St., Dunmore.
Interment will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Dunmore.
Family and friends may call on Friday, November 7th, from 4-6 p.m. at Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. East Drinker Street, Dunmore, PA 18512.
